Watters Remarks on Newsom’s Presidential Aspirations
On Wednesday, Jesse Watters from FOX News suggested that California Governor Gavin Newsom might be on track to become the “first female president.” This comment followed Newsom’s indication in a late October CBS interview that he might enter the presidential primary. Polls appear to show him leading over other Democratic contenders.
During a segment on “The Five,” Watters raised questions about the emotional readiness of women for the presidency, stating, “A lot of people are asking, ‘Is a woman mentally mature enough to be president?'” He continued, pointing out concerns about personal connections in business and respect from military leaders. Ultimately, he asserted that Newsom could indeed be the first female president.
Watters expressed some unconventional views, adding that, “A lot of people say a woman doesn’t have the sense of humor to be president.” While he doesn’t necessarily agree, he believes Newsom has that potential. He described Newsom’s demeanor as somewhat feminine, mentioning that he seems emotionally unstable and perhaps experiencing a midlife or identity crisis. “He sounds like he has a lot going for him,” Watters said, noting Newsom’s athleticism and charm.
However, he advised Newsom to reconsider his presidential ambitions, suggesting that he should consider seeing a psychiatrist instead. “I think he’s running to prove something to his father or to get back at bullies from middle school,” Watters remarked.
Current polling data indicates Newsom has a 30% approval rating, with almost 42% disapproval. CNN’s Harry Enten noted that while he leads other Democratic contenders with 19%, he is closely followed by former Vice President Kamala Harris at 18%. Yet, Harris shows a consistent average lead of 6.5 points, based on RealClearPolling. Newsom’s odds of winning the presidency have fluctuated, seeing a drop from 37% in November to 28% in February, especially after he began disparaging President Trump on social media.
Newsom has also faced criticism for his comments regarding his connection to Atlanta Mayor Andrew Dickens, which some found insensitive. Furthermore, both he and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have been reproached for their handling of the recent wildfires in California that resulted in significant devastation.
