Ukrainian President Discusses Progress in War Negotiations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Wednesday that there’s a renewed sense of hope for ending the ongoing conflict with Russia. This favorable outlook follows a meeting where he sought to advance a security agreement supported by the United States.
Zelenskiy shared on X Post that his discussions with officials were “positive.” Attendees included Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside Senator Lindsey Graham and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Their focus was on forging a “peace with dignity.”
“We’ve agreed to bolster our security and have directed our team to promptly revise the agreement. Our aim is to ensure that Ukraine’s security is robust, that post-war rebuilding is feasible, and, well, that it’s all within reach,” Zelensky stated.
He emphasized the importance of a definitive agreement, which could clarify the responses from Ukraine’s international allies aimed at deterring further Russian aggression. “It’s crucial that we present a united front, and Ukraine’s role in that is clear,” he added. “…I hope each team can make meaningful progress in the coming days. We need, ideally, a trilateral format and a leadership structure—all of that.”
In related news, Zelensky reported in a subsequent video that Russia had launched an extensive drone attack, deploying over 700 drones against various targets in Ukraine, including energy facilities and residential areas. Despite Ukrainian forces successfully intercepting around 90% of the drones, Zelensky accused Russia’s actions of being a direct retaliation for Ukraine’s proposed Easter ceasefire.
Reflecting on the intention behind the holiday ceasefire, he noted that the aim was to demonstrate that diplomacy could still be viable.
Moreover, President Zelenskiy mentioned that his Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, is actively negotiating long-term defense agreements with several Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, among others.
