Iran’s supreme leader has launched a full-fledged counterattack against President Donald Trump, aiming to consolidate Middle Eastern countries into an anti-American coalition, according to analysts on Sunday.
This bold move followed Trump’s proposal to broaden the Abraham Accords. Analysts contend that Tehran is positioning itself as the region’s “new sheriff,” pushing Gulf states, which have covert ties to Iran, to choose between America’s security and a so-called “new Islamic civilization.”
While talks between Iran and the United States seemed to be in progress on Sunday, Trump has not yet signed any prospective peace agreement.
On May 25, Trump shared insights on Truth Social after discussing the potential expansion of the 2020 Abraham Accords with leaders from various nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, and others.
Khamenei’s Attack on Trump After Middle East Talks
Mojtaba Khamenei responded to Trump’s engagements on May 26, advocating for a “new Islamic civilization” aimed at similar regional capitals.
“With sincere and pure intentions, I invite all Islamic countries and governments to foster goodwill, friendship, and cooperation. Together, we can make strides toward the advancement of the Islamic ummah and address the challenges facing the Islamic world,” Khamenei posted.
He mentioned the significance of regional cooperation that will shape the future order, emphasizing the formation of a cohesive Islamic ummah and a “#new Islamic civilization.”
Furthermore, he cautioned that “the United States will no longer find a safe haven for its mischief and military bases in West Asia.”
Dr. Omar Mohammed, highlighting Khamenei’s focus, stated that the intent is to unify the Islamic world under Iranian leadership as a counter to the US-led order. “This underscores an effort to build an alliance opposed to the Abraham Accords,” he remarked.
Insights from Israeli Military Officials
As Iranian military rhetoric escalates, Khamenei employs religious undertones, framing the regime as divinely ordained and denouncing U.S. military presence in Muslim territories as colonial occurrences that demand expulsion.
Experts pointed out that while the “Ummah” concept isn’t new—having been used by Khamenei’s father previously—the current timing and specificity mark a significant shift.
According to Mohammed, the Iranian message counters any normalization with Israel, illustrating a different narrative 24 hours apart from Trump’s discussions.

Highlighting the contradictions, Mohammed noted that while Gulf states remain skeptical of Iran’s overtures, they are equally wary of the U.S. response. The deal that may potentially be brokered in Washington could be misconstrued as a concession to Iran while ignoring recent hostilities.
