Attempted Murder Charges in Gilgo Beach Incident
Authorities in New York have charged a Venezuelan man with attempted murder following a disturbing attack on a male acquaintance. Experts are expressing concern about potential copycat crimes, particularly in light of a pending guilty plea from the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney stated that the accused, Ruben Guanipa Ramirez, allegedly drove the victim to a quiet beach where he attacked him with a knife from behind. The evidence found in Ramirez’s vehicle raises troubling questions about his intentions that evening.
Ramirez, 26, is accused of suffocating the unnamed victim with a rag, then stabbing him in the side and attempting to cut his throat. Following the incident, police searched his 2024 Lexus NX250 and reportedly discovered various weapons including knives, rope, gloves, and duct tape.
Ramirez’s immigration status remains unclear, and he is currently detained at the Suffolk County Jail, where Rex Heuerman, the suspected Gilgo Beach killer, is also held. While there is no official confirmation regarding any connections between the two cases, some observers, including former NYPD Sergeant Joseph Giacalone, have noted striking parallels.
Giacalone questioned the possibility of this being a copycat crime, particularly considering the nature of the items found in Ramirez’s car and the similarities to Heuerman’s alleged victims, who had been bound and wrapped in burlap and plastic.
Before the attack, Ramirez reportedly took the victim to a pool hall and then to another beachfront location, which adds another layer of coincidence, as Heuerman had spent time on the same beach during his summer patrols.
During the struggle, the victim received a defensive wound to his hand but managed to wrestle the knife from Ramirez. He then managed to drive away in Ramirez’s vehicle and called for help, eventually leading to police intervention.
Ramirez was found several hours later walking along the Long Island Expressway, quite a distance from the crime scene, and is currently being held on substantial bail. If convicted of attempted murder, he faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison, with his next court appearance scheduled for April 29.
