Chicago Mayor Calls for Amnesty Amid Tragedy
Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson recently suggested that the federal government should extend amnesty to undocumented immigrants, especially in light of the tragic death of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman. It is reported that Gorman was allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant.
During a recent news conference, Johnson addressed previous comments he made about the need to stop violence against immigrants. This came at a difficult time, as Gorman’s family was holding her funeral service.
A reporter confronted Johnson, stating, “While her family was grieving, you were at a rally advocating for illegal immigrants. Many Chicagoans believe this felt disrespectful, as if you were celebrating instead of mourning.” The reporter noted that many community members felt it seemed like he was “dancing on her grave.”
Another reporter pressed Johnson, asking if he would apologize given that his policies may have contributed to Gorman’s death. Johnson replied by acknowledging the tragedy of losing a child, especially from a parent’s perspective.
“What I need to do is recognize the terrible loss we’re facing. It’s important to ensure people are safe. I stand by my belief that we need to protect workers and immigrant communities. Violating constitutional rights does not enhance safety, and I will continue to support this.”
Following the heartbreaking incident involving Gorman, Johnson also urged Congress to consider granting amnesty to the millions of undocumented individuals living in the U.S.
“If this was truly about security, we would put together a comprehensive immigration reform package. Clearly, the federal government has fallen short in that area,” he expressed.
Details surrounding the incident reveal that at around 1 a.m. on March 19, Gorman was with friends near Toby Prinz Beach in the Rogers Park area when Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old undocumented Venezuelan, approached them and opened fire.
Despite running away, Gorman was tragically shot in the back, leading to her immediate death.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, Medina-Medina had crossed the southern border and was arrested on May 9, 2023. However, he was released into the U.S. due to catch-and-release policies from the previous administration.
In June 2023, he was arrested again in Chicago for shoplifting, but local policies prevented his transfer to ICE, allowing him to remain in the country without further consequence.
