Trump Urges Other Nations to Take Responsibility for Strait of Hormuz
U.S. State Department principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Piggott stated that President Donald Trump has argued effectively for other countries to “step up on the Strait of Hormuz.” This was highlighted during an interview after Piggott was questioned about why the United States bears the responsibility for securing the strait.
Piggott referenced Trump’s remarks from a speech given on Wednesday night, indicating, “As the president noted, we shouldn’t be the ones doing that.” He explained that the military actions taken have significantly weakened Iran’s air force and navy, and diminished their leadership and missile capabilities. “The president elaborated on the severe aftermath of these operations,” Piggott added.
He continued to emphasize that Trump has made strong public pleas regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Notably, while the U.S. does not rely heavily on oil from this region, many other countries do, suggesting that these nations should take on more of the responsibility.
“As I said in my remarks last night, it’s time for other countries to step up regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has already done its part by targeting Iran’s military capabilities,” Piggott noted.
Moreover, Trump has previously encouraged nations to act decisively in matters of their own security. In a post on Truth Social from March 31, he commented on countries struggling to secure jet fuel due to tensions in the strait, specifically naming the UK. He suggested they purchase from the U.S. and advised, “You have to start learning how to fight for yourself. The United States is not there to help you anymore, just like you were not there for us.”
In closing, Trump reiterated that Iran has been severely impacted and that it’s time for other countries to take initiative in securing their own oil supplies.
