Increased Security Measures Requested for NFL Draft in Pittsburgh
Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security, advocating for enhanced safety protocols for the NFL Draft slated to take place in Pittsburgh.
His request comes amid ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Iran, highlighting the need for increased security at the event. Fetterman’s letter emphasizes the historical significance of the Draft, noting that it’s the first time since 1948 that the event will be held in the city. He anticipates over 700,000 fans attending the outdoor festivities at Point State Park and Acresure Stadium, with more than 50 million viewers expected to watch online or on television.
He stated, “I am asking the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to elevate the Special Event Evaluation Rating (SEAR) for the National Football League’s 2026 Draft to ensure that attendees and fans are safe.” Previously, the Draft had been categorized as a Level 3 SEAR event, and he is urging that it be raised to a higher level due to the evolving threat environment stemming from the situation in Iran.
Fetterman detailed that a Level 2 designation would facilitate improved coordination among law enforcement at all levels, along with additional resources like counter-drone capabilities, K9 units, and enhanced intelligence sharing. “Raising the SEAR designation for the Draft will guarantee that necessary resources are in place to protect fans and allow them to enjoy the event without concern,” he added.
The NFL Draft is scheduled to occur from April 23rd to 25th in Pittsburgh.
