Ozzie Guillen’s Emotional Announcement
Ozzie Guillen was taken aback recently. During the Chicago Sports Network broadcast, he joined Scott Podsednik while the White Sox played against the Blue Jays for their home opener, where they clinched a close 5-4 win.
Podsednik, who is famous for his role in the White Sox’s 2005 World Series championship, opened an envelope live on air, feigning ignorance about its contents.
Guillen leaned in closely, curious about what was inside, but his surprise grew as Podsednik began reading from the letter. “The Chicago White Sox are making an announcement today,” Podsednik stated, pausing to glance at Guillen.
Then Podsednik continued, “2005 World Series winning manager Ozzie Guillen will be honored on Saturday, August 8th.”
Guillen couldn’t help but cheekily ask, “Bobblehead again?” while chuckling.
Podsednik added, “I will retire the number 13 jersey with a special ceremony.”
This news hit Guillen hard, and he felt a wave of emotion as the crowd erupted in cheers for the now 62-year-old former coach.
In an emotional moment, he asked, “Where’s my wife?” as they embraced on set.
Guillen, a champion in the 2026 World Baseball Classic hailing from Venezuela, continues to be a beloved figure in Chicago, even years after his tenure.
He managed the White Sox from 2004 to 2011, achieving a Manager of the Year award and leading the team to its first World Series in 88 years in 2005.
With the White Sox, Guillen’s record stood at 678-617, with one championship and two playoff appearances, including four seasons with at least 88 wins. He later spent a season managing the Marlins in 2012.
Before his managerial career, Guillen was a three-time All-Star shortstop for the White Sox, earning a Gold Glove Award in 1990 and being named American League Rookie of the Year in 1985. He played for the Sox from 1985 to 1997, with brief periods on the Orioles, Braves, and Rays before retiring in 2000.
