Kurt Volker Urges Caution Amid NATO Discussions and Iran Tensions
Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Kurt Volker, recently spoke about the critical search for a missing airman after a U.S. F-15E fighter jet was downed in Iran. He expressed concern that Iran might exploit military personnel as propaganda tools. Volker also challenged President Trump’s suggestions to reassess NATO, reflecting on his support for the alliance post-9/11 and highlighting its significance for European security.
In an interview on “Fox News Live,” Volker emphasized that the U.S. and its allies need to “stop the sniping” and unify to address the conflict with Iran. He criticized the Trump administration for not properly consulting allies or setting clear operational goals. “I think this is completely wrong,” he remarked, referring to the ongoing friction.
There have been increasing rifts in military strategies among key allies regarding operations in Iran, with some, like Spain, rejecting the use of joint bases entirely. Volker noted that both parties should take a moment to reflect on NATO’s role in maintaining peace in Europe. “We need to stop the rhetoric,” he said, advocating for dialogue to resolve the ongoing issues in the Persian Gulf and restore security to Europe.
President Trump has hinted at a reevaluation of ties with some European partners following the current conflict, stating he never felt constrained by NATO and believes it to be weaker than it appears. With a scheduled meeting between Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte coming up, Volker expressed hope for a more productive conversation regarding U.S. objectives in Iran.
He stressed the need to clarify aims, asking whether the focus is on regime change or negotiation. “We must put together a workable plan and actively work to stop the shootings,” he concluded.
