High-Speed Chase Results in Fatal Crash Involving Undocumented Immigrant

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported on Saturday that a complaint has been lodged against an undocumented immigrant following a reckless police chase in Ohio that ended tragically, killing a 17-year-old girl who was pregnant, along with her unborn child, and injuring another woman.

Tarsem Singh, an Indian national, faces serious charges including vehicular homicide, manslaughter, and reckless homicide as stated by DHS. He is currently in custody with a bail set at $1 million, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has initiated an arrest warrant in Ohio.

The high-speed pursuit, which occurred on February 16, started when a deputy from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office spotted an SUV going nearly 25 miles per hour over the limit. The situation escalated quickly as officials reported that Singh was allegedly driving the SUV at speeds reaching 160 mph.

When the deputy attempted to pull him over with emergency lights activated, the SUV sped away for about five miles, peaking at an alarming 194 mph, before crashing into another vehicle at a curve, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies immediately responded to the accident, discovering that Singh’s passenger, the pregnant 17-year-old Ashley Holmes, was thrown from the vehicle and sadly pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by local media.

Singh, on the other hand, was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was conscious but injured and transported to Reed Hospital in Richmond, Indiana.

This chase lasted under three minutes, but the aftermath is devastating. The circumstances surrounding why Holmes was in Singh’s vehicle remain unclear. Lauren Biss, acting assistant secretary of the DHS, expressed that this incident underscores the dangers of allowing undocumented immigrants to operate vehicles in the U.S., emphasizing the tragic outcome resulting from Singh’s reckless behavior.

Singh reportedly entered the U.S. illegally through California’s southern border in February 2017 and was arrested, but later released on bail by a judge. Biss indicated that the ICE detainees responsible for the complaint are determined to ensure that Singh is not released again to potentially endanger more lives.
