Geno Auriemma Regrets Heated Exchange with Dawn Staley
Geno Auriemma, head coach of the University of Washington women’s basketball team, expressed regret following a conflict with South Carolina’s Dawn Staley after their recent Final Four matchup. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in a noticeable shouting match between the two coaches.
Auriemma voiced his frustrations, stating he was upset that Staley hadn’t shaken his hand prior to the game, although they had actually greeted each other earlier. He mentioned that he had waited some time to shake hands with her before the game began.
In a statement shared on social media, Auriemma acknowledged, “There’s no excuse for our behavior late in the game against South Carolina.” He pointed out that his reaction was out of line, emphasizing that the focus should be on South Carolina’s performance rather than his actions, and offered a sincere apology to both the team and staff.
Staley later addressed the incident during an interview with ESPN, mentioning, “I’m honest,” and noted that she was unaware of any slight toward Auriemma. Despite the misunderstanding, she recognized that emotions can run high during such intense games and affirmed that they would move on from the altercation.
Auriemma had also shown his displeasure with Staley and the referees during the game, expressing frustration over what he perceived as unfair treatment. He commented on the officiating, but post-game, he refrained from elaborating on the incident further.
When asked about his remarks to Staley, Auriemma chose not to elaborate, insisting he had stated what he felt, even if it wasn’t well-received. His refusal to dive deeper into the matter left some ambiguity around the nature of their exchange.
This game marked an end to the University of Washington’s impressive winning streak of 54 games, as South Carolina completed a perfect season, adding another layer of significance to the match.
