Promising Cancer Treatment Shows Remarkable Results

Doctors are expressing excitement over “unprecedented” outcomes from a cancer treatment that appears capable of completely eradicating tumors in some patients.

An injection known as amivantamab reduced tumor size in over a third of participants in a study that extended across 11 countries, according to a report by the Guardian.

This trial involved 102 patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Among them, 43 experienced noticeable reductions in their tumor sizes; specifically, around 28 had significant shrinkage, while 15 saw their tumors disappear entirely.

Interestingly, these changes were often noted in less than a week.

The treatment was targeted at patients whose cancers were either not responding to other therapies or had returned after previous treatments.

Amivantamab Shows Potential to Eliminate Tumors

Notably, those who received the injection had a median survival of a year post-treatment, despite having a potentially grave prognosis associated with their type of cancer when standard therapies fail.

Developed by Johnson & Johnson, amivantamab is currently undergoing evaluation in 60 clinical trials focused on various cancers, including lung, colorectal, brain, and gastric cancers.

The injection functions in three distinct ways: it blocks epidermal growth factor receptors, which encourage tumor growth, intercepts the MET pathway that allows cancer cells to evade treatment, and activates the immune system to combat tumors.

Carl Walsh, a 56-year-old participant in the initial trials, shared his experience after being diagnosed with tongue cancer in the summer of 2025. He expressed, somewhat tentatively, that he feels “very pleased” with the progress, noting that prior to the trial, he struggled with basic activities like speaking and eating due to pain and swelling.

“Since starting treatment, the swelling and pain have reduced significantly. I’m feeling more like my normal self,” he added, mentioning that he no longer suffers from the debilitating side effects he experienced during chemotherapy.

Kevin Harrington, a professor specializing in biological cancer therapies at London’s Institute of Cancer Research, remarked on the strong, unprecedented responses witnessed in patients who previously resisted both chemotherapy and immunotherapy. He highlighted that for this group of patients, treatment options had been extremely limited, making the results particularly striking.

Harrington also indicated the potential for this treatment to positively impact thousands of patients each year.
