South Carolina vs. UCLA: Overview and forecast for the 2026 NCAA women’s national championship game

NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship Game Announcement

PHOENIX — The upcoming NCAA women’s basketball national championship will feature South Carolina and UCLA battling for the title and bragging rights.

The game is scheduled to tip off at 3:30 PM ET and will be aired live on ABC.

In a recent semifinal match, the University of South Carolina secured a victory over the Huskies with a score of 62-48, marking UW’s first loss this season. This win also guarantees South Carolina a place in the 2026 national championship. The game was, however, somewhat marred by a heated exchange between the head coaches. Still, the Gamecocks showed strong defense, effectively limiting UW’s standout players, Aggie Fudd and Sarah Strong, who is the Naismith Player of the Year.

On the other hand, UCLA faced a struggling Texas team in their semifinal, managing to clinch a close win with a final score of 51-44. This victory marks UCLA’s first appearance in the championship game during the NCAA Tournament era. Notably, the Bruins’ only season loss occurred against Texas earlier in the Players Era Championship.

The Bruins are led by their impressive center, Lauren Betts, who stands out in both scoring and rebounding statistics. Betts often poses challenges for opposing teams, frequently drawing fouls, and at 6-foot-7, she makes a significant impact defensively. UCLA also boasts strong guard players such as Kiki Rice, Gabriella Jaquez, and Charliss Leger-Walker, all of whom can create scoring opportunities, especially when defenders focus on Betts.

“We’re going to face challenges because they have a very methodical approach to separating their plays,” reflected South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley on Saturday when discussing UCLA. “They come with a big player, a shooter, and a very intelligent point guard. They have the perfect setup.”

It remains to be seen what defensive strategy South Carolina will employ to counter Betts’ height. While Raven Johnson and Joyce Edwards successfully defended Fudd and Strong in their last game, Betts will add a different layer of difficulty.

“They have a dominant post in Lauren Betts and some excellent guards surrounding her. They’re upperclassmen with a lot of experience. It feels like they really know how to play together and are continually pushing each other,” Johnson mentioned. “We must stay focused and execute our game plan properly.”

A wealth of talent awaits South Carolina offensively, with five players averaging double digits in points per game this season. Freshman Agot Maker has particularly thrived during the NCAA Tournament, stepping up his scoring and minutes. However, on any given night, it’s anyone’s game when a South Carolina player might shine and disrupt their opponents’ plans.

“We need to put in our utmost effort for all 40 minutes without letting up,” Betts emphasized. “Playing against a team like this demands aggressiveness from us on both ends. Offensively, we need to maintain our composure and work together, while defensively, it’s imperative to limit them to just one shot and focus on rebounding. The total number of rebounds doesn’t matter to me, as long as we’re securing boards.”

According to FanDuel odds, South Carolina is favored 3.5 times over UCLA. This will be the Gamecocks’ fifth national championship appearance, and experience may play a crucial role in this significant moment, possibly giving them an edge.

Prediction: South Carolina 68, UCLA 58
