Prayer Movement Urges Christians to Pray for a ‘Christ-Centered Awakening’ in America

Surveys Indicate That Many Jews Feel Unsafe as Antisemitism Grows

There’s a lot happening in the world right now that seems worthy of prayer—like the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, tensions in Iran, and concerns over the Strait of Hormuz. It really feels like America and the rest of the globe could use some divine support. In response, a diverse group of bipartisan leaders has come together, rallying behind a movement they’ve named “Prayer of the Heart.”

America’s “crisis of faith and hope”

They perceive a “crisis of faith and hope” in the U.S., coupled with a troubling lack of unity, suggesting that “only divine intervention can save us,” according to those organizing the project. They aim to mobilize one million Americans to pray for a “Christ-centered awakening” as Pentecost approaches, which runs from April 5th to May 24th.

Pentecost is significant in the Christian tradition as it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit after Jesus ascended into heaven. The event is captured in the second chapter of Acts, where Jesus’ apostles were empowered to preach in various languages, reaching numerous people in Jerusalem. That day, about 3,000 individuals accepted Jesus and were baptized.

One million intercessors called to pray for one million souls

This year, the hope is that one million people across the U.S. will participate in prayer for the salvation of another million souls. The organization intends to organize outdoor gatherings in all 50 states, alongside prayer events in local counties, to prepare for the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.

Dr. Douglas Small, the movement’s founder and executive director, shared, “The birth of our nation required a great awakening. We want to restore true hope in American lives through Jesus Christ. We’re confident this movement will transform hearts, ignite faith in Christ, and revive hope across the country.”

A number of prominent Christian leaders are backing this initiative, including Franklin Graham, the President and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Doug Clay, General Overseer of the Assemblies of God USA, Dr. David F. Nixon, Emeritus District Director of the Church of the Nazarene, and Liz Adreta, a strategist in global prayer efforts.
