Cooper Flagg Shines in Mavericks Victory Over Lakers
In a competitive Sunday matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, Cooper Flagg entered the game competing for the NBA Rookie of the Year title alongside his former Duke teammate, Con Knuppel.
Flagg, who was on track to score 51 points, needed one more stellar performance to bolster his chances of winning the award. And he certainly delivered.
In his game, the Mavericks secured a 134-128 victory as Flagg lit up the scoreboard with 45 points. This win broke the team’s longest home losing streak in three decades. He also managed to add nine assists and eight rebounds, showing a well-rounded game.
After the game, he mentioned, “I definitely think it’s some kind of statement. But, you know, I’m confident in myself and I know what I’m capable of. I’ll let the rest take care of itself.”
Interestingly, Flagg became the first rookie since Allen Iverson in the 1996-97 season to score over 40 points in back-to-back games. This achievement followed his impressive 51-point performance against the Orlando Magic just a few nights earlier, making him the first teenager in history to score at least 50 points in an NBA game.
Lakers Struggles Continue
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd commented on Flagg’s performance, noting, “I think he’s doing what he’s been doing all season: being able to play in different positions and not being uncomfortable. He doesn’t complain and gives his all for the team.”
With this latest victory, Flagg now leads the Mavericks, who hold a record of 25-53, averaging 20.8 points per game, along with 6.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists.
On the other hand, Knuppel has been a bright spot for the Charlotte Hornets, who hope to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. He’s currently the team’s third-leading scorer, averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.
With only four games left for Dallas and three for Charlotte, the race for the Rookie of the Year title remains intense.
