California Gubernatorial Race Heats Up

As California Governor Gavin Newsom’s term approaches its end, a variety of candidates are stepping forward in the race for his position ahead of the gubernatorial primary on June 2nd.

According to the official certified list, there are sixty-one individuals vying for the state’s top office. While there isn’t a clear frontrunner, several prominent figures have already emerged. Former Rep. Katie Porter (D), Rep. Eric Swalwell (D), climate change advocate Tom Steyer (D), Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco (R), and Fox News host Steve Hilton (R) are among those making headlines.

President Donald Trump recently voiced his support for Hilton, hoping to sway the crowded race in his favor. He shared his endorsement on social media, stating, “I have known and respected Steve Hilton for many years. He’s a truly remarkable man who has seen this once great nation go to hell.”

Trump criticized Governor Newsom, referring to him as “Newscam,” and called out other Democrats for their performance. He mentioned, “People are fleeing, crime is up, and taxes are higher than any other state in this country.” Trump expressed confidence in Hilton’s ability to bring positive change, stating, “With federal help and a great governor like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever!”

Trump assured that Hilton has his “full and complete support” as the primary approaches, highlighting his belief that Hilton would be an exceptional governor.

In response, Hilton’s camp thanked Trump for his endorsement, saying, “With the full support of President Trump and the federal government, we’re going to take California back and make it better than ever! This is the moment California has been waiting for!”

Newsom, meanwhile, has expressed reservations about the crowded nature of the race. Speaking to CBS News earlier this month, he indicated he wasn’t ready to support any candidate at this point.

Current polls show varying leads among the candidates, with some indicating that Hilton might be ahead, while others favor Bianco, Swalwell, and Porter. Ultimately, the top two candidates from the primary will move on to appear on the November ballot, regardless of their party affiliation.
