American Woman Goes Missing in the Bahamas

An American woman has gone missing in the Bahamas after she fell overboard during an evening boat ride. Reports indicate that this incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday while she was on a trip from Hope Town to Elbow Cay with her husband, according to local police.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that the woman, identified as 56-year-old Lynette Hooker, fell from the boat while holding the ignition key, which caused the engine to stall. Her husband, 58-year-old Brian Hooker, was also involved in the incident. They had departed from the Abaco Inn in a small craft heading towards their yacht.

Authorities detailed that Brian Hooker subsequently went missing after being swept away by strong currents, confirming that both individuals are U.S. nationals.

Stafford Plug Patterson, Deputy Chief of the Hopetown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, provided information on the situation, noting that Brian eventually made it to shore around 4 a.m. on Sunday at the Marsh Harbor Boatyard. After reaching land, he reached out to someone, who alerted the police about his wife’s disappearance.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force, alongside the Royal Bahamas Defense Force and Hope Town Fire and Rescue, are currently investigating the disappearance of Lynette Hooker.

In light of this incident, the United States Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas, urging Americans to exercise heightened vigilance regarding crime, beach safety, and water activities like jet skiing and boating.

Officials from the State Department commented on the regulations surrounding boating in the Bahamas, emphasizing that the existing lack of regulation has led to various injuries and fatalities.
