Trump reaches out to Artemis II crew following historic flyby of the moon's far side

Artemis II’s Historic Journey to the Moon

On Monday, Artemis II embarked on a groundbreaking mission, traveling to the far side of the moon. Early in the journey, pilot Victor Glover expressed a moment of prayer for safety after communication suddenly ceased.

President Donald Trump, reaching out from the Houston mission station, inquired about the crew’s feelings during this communication blackout. “How did you feel when you couldn’t get in touch?” he asked, emphasizing the unique challenges of that moment. In response, Glover humorously acknowledged his initial prayer, but noted the need to stay focused on their tasks.

During this unexpected 45-minute period of silence, the crew quickly returned to their scientific observations, even as darkness enveloped them.

As Glover continued his reflections, he described their unprecedented proximity to the moon, stating, “We were able to make the most detailed observations of the far side of the moon up close.” His excitement was palpable as he spoke about the remarkable sights they were encountering.

Insight on the Moon’s Distinct Features

Trump pressed further during their conversation, asking whether the crew noticed any differences between the two sides of the moon. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen chimed in, sharing that the lack of light fundamentally altered their perspective. He pointed out how the far side appeared markedly different and less familiar than the side typically seen from Earth.

The gravitational influence of Earth shapes the near side’s visible features, while the far side presents a unique landscape filled with fewer dark patches. Hansen remarked on its eerie beauty, noting that “there’s very little on that side. I mean, it’s really pretty.”

Hansen also took a moment to express gratitude towards Trump, even acknowledging their often rocky relations in the past. “I’m on the microphone, and on behalf of Canada, I want to thank you,” he said, praising America’s lead in space exploration.

Collaboration for a Unified Vision

Hansen emphasized the importance of collaboration among nations. He mentioned that leading countries establish ambitious goals that benefit humanity as a whole, allowing alliances like Canada’s to contribute to significant milestones such as lunar presence and future Mars missions. His pride in being part of the program was evident.

Trump, in turn, mentioned Canadian sports icon Wayne Gretzky, underscoring the pride Canadians feel for Hansen’s courage and achievements. “I don’t know if they want to do it… But you’re so brave, so courageous,” Trump said.

Remarkable Discoveries During the Mission

Victor Glover’s perspective on explorations reached deeper significance when he emphasized that moon exploration is “human history” rather than simply “black history.” Meanwhile, Christina Koch, another crew member, recalled the thrill of reconnecting with Earth after their brief communication loss, reflecting on the mission’s essence.

Captain Reed Wiseman highlighted the crew’s experiences, including witnessing stunning celestial events. He described seeing the sun’s corona during a solar eclipse and the alignment of planets on the far side of the moon. Wiseman conveyed a sense of optimistic wonder, envisioning a future where humanity spans multiple planets.
