Virginia Governor Faces Pressure on Immigration Policies
RICHMOND, Va. — Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia recently declined to address a question regarding calls from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to abolish sanctuary policies in the state.
The DHS made a statement urging her to put an end to protection policies that they argue are allowing illegal immigrants to remain in Virginia, thereby compromising public safety. They claimed, “Governor Spanberger must end the protection policies that allow these illegal aliens onto the streets and work with DHS to protect federal citizens.”
In recent weeks, Virginia, particularly in Fairfax County, has experienced a troubling uptick in violent incidents involving illegal immigrants.
DHS Criticizes Spanberger Amid Arrest Reports
This month, charges were brought against Misael López Gómez, a 28-year-old from Guatemala, for murdering his three-month-old daughter. This incident followed another case where Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, also from Guatemala, was indicted for fatally stabbing a man in his home. Notably, the county is also the scene of a February stabbing by Abdul Jallow, a repeat offender from Sierra Leone.
The DHS anticipates that by 2026, a significant portion—three out of four—of murder suspects in Fairfax County will be undocumented immigrants. However, Spanberger did not respond to these statistics.
Further Controversies Arise
In another incident, Israel Flores Ortiz, a 19-year-old illegal immigrant, has been charged with multiple counts of assault and battery for allegedly molesting several female students at his high school. Parents and victims have reported he approached numerous girls in crowded areas, groping them.
Lauren Biss, DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary, expressed concern regarding the potential release of Ortiz, urging Fairfax County officials not to allow a “predator” back into the community. She has also criticized Spanberger for reversing previous cooperation policies between state law enforcement and ICE, stating that ICE’s actions favor illegal aliens over American citizens.
Public Opinion and Ongoing Challenges
Spanberger’s early decisions included aligning herself with other Democratic governors who limit local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration efforts. In January, she rescinded a requirement for local-federal coordination, asserting that Virginia’s resources should be focused on enforcing state laws, rather than federal immigration laws.
She stated, “Virginians are being deprived of critical public safety and local law enforcement in order to divert limited resources to federal civil immigration law enforcement.” Additionally, Spanberger called for federal authorities to manage immigration enforcement while prioritizing the safety of Virginia residents.
Public sentiment seems to be shifting. Reports indicate that Spanberger’s approval ratings are declining amid backlash concerning gerrymandering and her handling of these immigration issues. She is currently engaged in outreach efforts as she prepares for the upcoming gubernatorial election, aiming to connect with voters across Virginia.
