Border wall is set to be completed by June 2027, according to DHS Secretary Mullin.

Progress on Border Wall Construction Announced

On Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin shared that efforts to construct a significant border wall from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico are progressing well, with a completion target set for June 2027.

Mullin mentioned that all contracts related to the project should be finalized by the end of this month, emphasizing the “significant progress” being made.

His remarks were made during testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee concerning the department’s budget for the fiscal year 2027. He previously testified in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday.

Border Wall Construction During Record Low Illegal Crossings

Interestingly, as the construction of the border wall ramps up, illegal crossings have hit a record low.

However, Mullin clarified that there are distinctions between primary and secondary walls. “The main barrier is the first one because of how the cartels are coordinated… They’re thugs, they’re terrorists,” he stated. Mullin noted that the situation requires stronger defenses, as cartels have managed to cut through the existing barriers. Each new fence installed effectively reduces the “choke point” for criminal activity.

Innovative Technologies for Border Security

Plans also include the addition of 150-foot-tall walls in targeted areas, alongside “smart walls” that help monitor crossings. “The smart wall is quite impressive,” he remarked, mentioning the capabilities of drones to provide real-time oversight.

Mullin expressed optimism about completing the remaining work, aiming for a summer 2028 finish while acknowledging the complexities that lie ahead.

He mentioned his personal involvement in overseeing wall construction via aerial surveys and acknowledged concerns voiced by some Democratic senators and representatives. “We are working to address them immediately,” he assured.
