Spouse Reported Partner Upon Finding His AI-Generated Child Porn Collection

Charges Filed for Child Pornography Possession

A 35-year-old man from the Detroit area is facing multiple charges related to child pornography. Authorities reportedly found over 40,000 illegal images on his devices. This situation began when the man, identified as Austin McCarty from South Lyon, Michigan, claimed to his wife that the images weren’t illegal since they were created using AI technology.

McCarty is charged with serious felonies, including three counts of aggravated possession of child sexual abuse material and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime. The investigation was prompted by a report from his wife, who discovered disturbing images on her husband’s computer on January 20, 2025.

When confronted about this, McCarty purportedly told his wife that he had utilized AI tools to produce deepfake images. However, this explanation did not spare him from legal action.

Following the report, police confiscated his electronic devices for examination. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department spent over a year analyzing these devices, uncovering a shocking total of 40,000 images that they allege are related to child sexual abuse.

In addressing the issue, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized that using technology like AI doesn’t exempt individuals from legal consequences. “As technology evolves, the laws against child sexual abuse remain constant,” she stated. “Whether these images came from AI or a camera, they depict child abuse. We will hold anyone accountable who harms and exploits children, no matter what tools they use.”

McCarty’s charges come with significant penalties. Those guilty of aggravated possession of child sexual abuse material could face up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $50,000. Additionally, using a computer for such crimes could lead to sentences ranging from 10 to 20 years.

Interestingly, there have been other similar cases reported, such as one involving a Florida teacher who was accused of using student photos to create AI-generated child pornography.

As the situation unfolds, it raises ongoing discussions about the implications of AI in such contexts, highlighting concerns regarding child safety and technological ethics.
