American Woman Goes Missing in Bahamas After Falling from Boat
An American woman in her fifties, identified as Lynette Hooker, has gone missing in the Bahamas after an incident during a boat trip with her husband, Brian Hooker. Friends described her as someone who envisioned a peaceful retirement sailing the seas, a dream that has now been overshadowed by this tragedy.
According to Bahamian authorities, the couple set off from the Abaco Inn in Hope Town on Saturday evening around 7:30 p.m., shortly after sunset. They were heading to their yacht moored at Elbow Cay. Reports suggest that Lynette fell into the water while holding the boat’s ignition key, which caused the small boat, or dinghy, to lose power. Brian stated that the currents pulled him back to the marina in Marsh Harbor, where he reported his wife missing early Sunday morning.
John Waters, a mutual friend, recounted meeting Lynette earlier this year at an oyster bar in Panama City Beach, Florida. He mentioned how the couple had been traveling throughout the Gulf of Mexico and had recently acquired a boat in Texas, spending a year preparing it for their new lifestyle.
Waters described them as genuinely kind people who were excited about their future adventures, though he noted they were relatively inexperienced boaters. After three days of searching, officials have provided little new information about Lynette’s whereabouts.
Richard Cooke, a leader from the Hopetown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, stated that foul play is not suspected and attributed the incident to a series of poor decisions that night, including unfavorable weather that made navigation challenging.
Daughter Expresses Concerns
Lynette’s daughter, Carly Aylesworth, who is not related to Brian, shared her worries in interviews, claiming that there is a troubling history of violence towards her mother. “I believe something may have happened to her,” she noted, stating there have been previous threats made against Lynette, including instances where her mother was choked and threatened with being thrown overboard.
Carly also pointed out that her mother was not experienced at driving the boat, raising questions about how she ended up with the keys. The family has not received any response from Brian Hooker, who has not been charged with any crime at this point.
Brian’s behavior when drinking has come under scrutiny, according to Carly. She described changes in his demeanor, saying, “He’ll start acting smarter, bullying more, making decisions aimed at irritating others.” This aspect adds to the uncertainty surrounding the events of that night.
Authorities have not confirmed whether Lynette was wearing a life jacket when she fell. The couple was quite active on social media, regularly sharing their boating experiences. Just a day before the incident, Lynette posted an upbeat message on Instagram suggesting they were enjoying their time on the water.
Local law enforcement agencies, alongside the U.S. Department of State, are actively investigating the case. The State Department has acknowledged reports about missing Americans and is working closely with Bahamian authorities. It also highlighted the reality that boating safety regulations in the Bahamas are lax, which can lead to serious accidents.
