Georgia Special Election for Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Seat
On Tuesday, voters in Georgia participated in a special election to fill the vacancy left by Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation on January 5.
The leading candidates were Republican Clay Fuller and Democrat Sean Harris. The special primary election held on March 10 had seen 17 candidates compete, with results from that initial round being crucial in determining the final candidates.
In the special election, with nearly all votes counted, Fuller garnered about 56% while Harris received approximately 44%. Harris, a retired Army brigadier general, received support from Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.).
Interestingly, despite being heavily endorsed by former President Trump, who invested around $1.2 million in support of Fuller, the Republican candidate ultimately lost. Greene had previously won against Harris by a significant margin in 2024.
One of the notable points of contention between Fuller and Harris was the approach to military actions against Iran. Harris expressed, “I spent 40 years in the military… The reality is this is a war of choices,” while Fuller defended Trump’s actions, declaring, “Our country is safer because of President Trump’s actions against Iran.”
Had Harris emerged victorious, Democrats might have felt hopeful about regaining control of both houses of Congress in upcoming midterm elections. For now, Fuller will fulfill Greene’s remaining term but will need to win the November election for a complete two-year term.
Despite her prior allegiance to Trump, Greene has recently voiced discontent towards the former president, criticizing his actions during her exit from office.
On Sunday, Greene referred to Trump as “crazy,” responding to Iran’s threats unless control of the Strait of Hormuz was returned. She commented, “Everyone in this administration who claims to be Christian needs to get on their knees and ask God for forgiveness, stop worshipping the president, and intervene in Trump’s madness.”
