Reporter Questions Hegseth About U.S. Readiness to 'Eliminate' Iran

Military Readiness and Tensions with Iran

During a recent exchange, Daily Caller White House correspondent Reagan Reese questioned Army Secretary Pete Hegseth about the U.S. military’s readiness to “wipe out” Iranian civilization. This discussion arose after President Trump warned that an entire civilization could “perish” if Iran didn’t agree to a deal regarding the Strait of Hormuz by a specified deadline.

Reese probed, asking if the president was truly prepared to completely eliminate Iran should negotiations not resume. Hegseth responded, indicating that the military had strategic targets in mind, including critical infrastructure like power plants and bridges. He characterized the Iranian government as a terrorist regime that uses these assets to fund military activities.

He mentioned, “We set our goals, locked and loaded: infrastructure, bridges, power plants.” Hegseth emphasized the legitimacy of these targets, suggesting that Iran recognized the U.S. as a credible threat.

According to Hegseth, the U.S. had already struck some military positions in Kharg, sending a clear message to Iran about its vulnerabilities. He noted that Iran’s capacity to maintain its regime was closely linked to its ability to produce energy, which the U.S. could disrupt if necessary. This pressure, he argued, encouraged Iran to negotiate.

Ultimately, Iran agreed to a two-week conditional ceasefire, which includes the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The closure of this vital trade route had already caused U.S. gasoline prices to exceed $4.10 per gallon, affecting the market significantly.

In light of the developments, President Trump decided to put on hold a planned military strike against Iran, having previously indicated that the situation would lead to severe consequences for the Iranian people if the waterway remained closed.
