Former Army Official Indicted for Sharing Classified Information
A former Army official, Courtney Williams, was indicted on Wednesday for allegedly leaking classified information to journalists.
Williams, who is 40, had access to top-secret materials while she was part of a “special military unit” at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from 2010 to 2016. The details surrounding her indictment indicate serious implications.
Between 2022 and 2025, she is said to have communicated with journalist Seth Harp via phone and text. During this period, she provided him with information that included “classified national defense information,” which Harp went on to publish in various articles and books.
Harp has publicly criticized the information associated with Williams. The case also touches on serious issues such as sexual misconduct and drug trafficking within the Army’s Delta Force unit.
It’s worth noting that the exact classified details in Harp’s works remain unclear. However, the indictment mentions they relate to highly confidential “tactics, techniques, and procedures” used by special forces.
Williams seemed to express regret after encountering Harp’s article. She sent messages to both the journalist and her mother indicating concern over what was attributed to her.
In a message, she remarked, “I wish you would have sent me a copy of what was going to be published before it was published…I definitely would have been concerned about the amount of classified information being made public.” The indictment reflected her apprehension that her disclosures could have repercussions.
She also said, “I’m taking a deep breath and I have a feeling this is going to be a nightmare for these kids.” Williams remarked to her mother, “I could actually get arrested and I’m not getting free books” when her mother inquired about the situation. “For leaking confidential information,” she replied.
Harp, when approached, did not comment on the matter.
In a social media post, he referred to Williams as a “courageous whistleblower,” condemning her arrest as “an outrageous act.”
Besides sharing classified information with Harp, Williams is also charged with the “unauthorized disclosure of national defense information” on social media. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that her arrest aims to send a clear message to those contemplating leaks, asserting, “The FBI will not tolerate those who betray our country and endanger the American people.”
