Wisconsin Couple Arrested for Child Abuse
A couple from Wisconsin has been arrested amid serious allegations of abuse against their six children. Authorities suspect that Casey Cano, 38, and Mary Cano, 35, forced their children to consume mold, insects, and even dog food, while starving them over an extended period.
Both face multiple charges, including six counts of repeated physical abuse resulting in significant bodily harm, and child neglect. Additionally, they are charged with one count related to causing a child under 13 to witness or listen to a sexual act, as outlined in court documents.
Prosecutors assert that between January 2018 and April 2022, the couple frequently used belts to beat their children at their home in Crawford County, Wisconsin, leading to visible signs of injury. Reports indicate that they also used food deprivation as a form of punishment.
According to a criminal complaint, the living conditions for the children were described as horrific. They went without food for days at a time and were compelled to eat things like mold and grass to survive. In a disturbing account, one child reported that her brother wore the same diaper for three days as a form of “punishment.”
The children were taken from the home around April 2022, which was related to a separate incident involving sexual abuse of another child, as detailed in the complaint.
It has been reported that the children were aged between 1 and 9 years old at the time of the alleged abuse, and that these disturbing actions may have started when they were as young as three months old.
Mary Cano’s charges include a “party to a crime” modifier, indicating that she did not intervene to stop the ongoing abuse.
It’s worth noting that the couple had previous convictions for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old in 2022. A renewed investigation into their actions commenced in December of last year, leading to their arrest in March. They were later released on bail.
As of now, there has been no scheduled date for their next court hearing.
