A coalition in Detroit is introducing cash incentives of up to $15,000 to not only attract newcomers but also to keep current residents, aiming to enhance the city’s economic growth.
The program, named “Make Detroit Home,” plans to dispense over $500,000 in benefits to more than 300 participants. This initiative, launched by the MoveDetroit coalition, targets entrepreneurs, creators, small business owners, and includes both existing residents and those considering relocation.
Grants of up to $15,000 are available to help with home down payments, renovations, rent, and business costs, as reported by Realtor.com.
Moreover, some applicants might receive an additional $1,000 grant to assist with expenses like moving costs, security deposits, gym memberships, and food services.
“This scholarship demonstrates that Detroit is serious about attracting residents, and the data backs up its appeal,” noted Hannah Jones, a senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com, in an email.
“Detroit is often cited as one of the most affordable major cities in the U.S., and a $15,000 incentive can genuinely make a difference in covering down payments or facilitating significant renovations, rather than merely making a dent in pricier markets.”
She added that this purchasing power, combined with the city’s momentum, might encourage “household formation and sustainable market stability.”
The “Make Detroit Home” initiative marks the first significant effort from the nonprofit MoveDetroit coalition, formed last month with backing from local organizations and the mayor’s office.
Billionaire Dan Gilbert, founder of Rocket Mortgage, serves as the chairman emeritus for the group.
“For too long, we’ve trained some of the brightest young people in the nation, only to see them depart for cities like New York, Atlanta, California, Seattle, and Miami,” Gilbert remarked. “Our major universities are losing close to half of their graduates. But today, we are changing that narrative.”
He highlighted a growing list of major employers in Detroit, such as Google and Fifth Third Bank, as part of what makes the city attractive.
This initiative is funded privately, with MoveDetroit aiming to gather $10 million this year, and Gilbert has pledged to match every dollar raised, according to Realtor.com.
“Detroit is a place to build, grow, and succeed,” Gilbert stated. “This city possesses the resilience and resources to compete nationally for talent. People are drawn to Detroit for its culture, energy, and opportunities. MoveDetroit seeks to unite various organizations to further boost Detroit’s development.”
