California lawmaker advocates for tech to minimize lethal car pursuits

A congresswoman from Southern California argues that law enforcement needs better funding to acquire essential technology aimed at decreasing the occurrence of dangerous high-speed chases in the state.

Laura Friedman (CA-30) revealed the Next Generation Traffic Safety Act recently, which seeks to unlock federal funds for advanced tools to help de-escalate pursuits. She mentioned innovative gadgets, similar to those used in a recent chase, that successfully stopped a fleeing suspect in Southern California.

“Everyone using our roads should feel safe and be able to return home, be it a police officer, a family out for dinner, or a student walking to school,” Friedman shared in a statement regarding her safety initiatives.

She noted that there’s a significant gap in technology available to police today, stating they often lack the latest innovations necessary for effectively managing dangerous situations.

According to her, the proposed legislation would enable “federal investment through the COPS grant program” for items like drones and other life-saving equipment.

Some possible technologies to be made available to law enforcement include:

  • Vehicle disable systems designed to safely halt fleeing vehicles;
  • Bumper systems that minimize the chances of perilous collisions;
  • Drones capable of monitoring vehicles from above, reducing the need for officers to put themselves and others at risk on the ground.

“This bill is straightforward, bipartisan, and has the potential to save lives. It’s encouraging to see law enforcement and road safety advocates coming together because investing in smarter tools benefits everyone,” she stated.

Earlier this week, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department employed a similar approach during a high-speed chase in Jurupa Valley, which tragically ended with the death of a suspect.

Footage captured during the event showed police using a new grappling device, which snagged onto the fleeing vehicle, causing it to lose control and crash. A standoff followed the crash as the suspect refused to leave the vehicle. Police, equipped with drones and armored vehicles, ultimately used tear gas to compel him to surrender.

When authorities finally entered the vehicle, they discovered the suspect had sustained fatal self-inflicted injuries during the incident.
