Pro-Life Victory: DOJ Settlement Marks Legal Milestone

For those who advocate for pro-life values, the journey can be fraught with challenges. However, it seems there’s a notable development on the horizon. Recently, 40 Days for Life shared some promising news via a blog post, indicating that the Department of Justice has settled after years of legal disputes stemming from an altercation with pro-life volunteer Mark Houck outside an abortion clinic.

Sean Carney, the CEO and President of 40 Days for Life, referred to this as a “major legal victory for free speech” during a video statement. He also noted that changes in administration played a significant role. “Under the Biden administration, there was a lot of persecution from the Justice Department, and President Trump rectified that,” Carney commented.

Mark Houck’s case involved a settlement that reportedly exceeds $1 million, according to 40 Days for Life. CJ Doyle, the executive director of Catholic Action Alliance of Massachusetts, emphasized that Houck was a victim of politically motivated prosecution by the Biden administration. “All Americans who support the rule of law should celebrate this victory,” Doyle stated.

The conflict began in 2021 when Houck, while with his son, had a contentious encounter with an abortion escort in Philadelphia. According to reports, he pushed the escort to shield his son from potential harm. Although the escort fell, they were not severely injured. Following this incident, armed state and federal agents raided Houck’s home, leading to a lengthy ordeal during which he faced serious charges under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act.

Ultimately, a jury acquitted Houck in January 2023, and he chose not to settle with the DOJ, opting instead to pursue damages from his unsettling arrest. Houck has been involved with 40 Days for Life from the start; the organization claims to have aided in the rescue of over 26,000 unborn babies and the closure of more than 180 abortion clinics since its inception in 2007.
