Critics were left feeling uneasy after Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s unconventional celebration of his 100th day in office. This event featured a quirky “museum” showcasing oddities, including mock trash from Taco Bell meals.
The extravagant event highlighted this nascent mayor’s approach, all while Democrats faced a steep $5.4 billion budget shortfall. Among the “artifacts” displayed were pieces of asphalt that had filled potholes, a miniature lectern from a past announcement regarding a city-funded childcare program, and what appeared to be an old Taco Bell bag from a March social media initiative.
City Hall later clarified that the displayed trash wasn’t genuine refuse but rather items created specifically for the “museum.”
“This weekend’s theatrical performance is on brand for someone who seems to equate being mayor of America’s largest city with being a TikTok influencer,” commented City Councilman David Carr (R-Staten Island) the day after confetti rained down at the event.
“It’s a clever distraction from the fact that he’s really just validated his critics,” Carr added.
Mamdani, 34, grabbed headlines when he gathered friends at the Knockdown Center concert hall in Queens for a speech that celebrated his own milestones, reiterating his ambitious promises. He emphasized his commitment to govern as a socialist.
“I know many use ‘socialist’ as a dirty word, something to feel ashamed of,” Mamdani stated. “But we have no shame in using our government to advocate for the many, not the few.”
The mayor highlighted various potholes he has dealt with, road repavings, and an initiative to expedite city buses. He revealed plans for city-owned discounted grocery stores, starting with one in East Harlem set to open in 2027, alongside plans for four additional stores by the end of his first term in 2029.
Critics, however, remained skeptical about these claims and showed little interest in the celebration.
“The mayor is attempting to portray a positive image, but daily life for New Yorkers reflects a lack of real change,” said Councilmember Joanne Arriola (R-Queens). “We’re witnessing machete attacks in the subway, explosions at Gracie’s, and a growing sense of insecurity.”
“He’s so fixated on empty promises that he overlooks the fact that most people just want to work and return home without fear,” she continued.
The speech, along with the unusual museum displaying Taco Bell items, harkened back to a “mukbang” YouTube video featuring Mamdani and Sam Levin from the Consumer and Worker Protection Bureau, where they consumed fast food while announcing a settlement against Taco Bell and Dunkin’ valued at $1.5 million.
Senator Bernie Sanders unexpectedly showed up to support Mamdani at the celebration, though not all leftists in the city appear to align with the mayor after the event.
“There seems to be no logic to what Mayor Mamdani does,” quipped a Democratic Party official regarding the festivities.
