Democrats are intensifying their opposition to President Donald Trump’s proposed memorial arch, employing both vocal criticism and legal measures to challenge the project.
White House Press Secretary Davis Ingle remarked, “Democrats resist anything that highlights our country’s achievements because they represent America’s past failures.” He asserted that the arch, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe, would become a significant landmark in Washington, D.C., and beyond.
Following the announcement of the arch’s design, Democratic officials raised concerns regarding its cost and symbolic meaning. They continue to put pressure on the president’s authority amidst ongoing legal disputes.
Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed expressed frustration on social media, noting, “While I was focused on healthcare and rising gas prices, he’s busy crafting a 250-foot arch he calls the Trump Ark. #allabouthim.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom weighed in, stating, “Sure, taxes might increase, but be reassured. At least $15 million of that will fund the president’s arch project.”
Meanwhile, California’s long-plagued high-speed rail initiative started with a $33 billion budget in 2008 but has now surged to an expected $126 billion, with billions in federal funding cut due to issues with its viability.
Congressman Jared Huffman criticized the proposed inscription “One Nation Under God,” arguing it represents Cold War propaganda and deviates from the principles of religious freedom that shaped the nation. He described the monument as a “Christian nationalist monument” funded by taxpayers.
Huffman and other Democrats have challenged the arch project in court, asserting that erecting monuments on federal land requires Congressional approval.
The court filing pointed out, “Allowing the Arch’s construction without adequate Congressional oversight might lead to an uncontrollable spread of monuments, damaging public spaces and restricting future recognition of historical events.”
President Trump has vowed to enhance the capital’s aesthetic through an executive order aimed at beautifying the District of Columbia. He previously expressed on Truth Social his commitment to restoring its former glory, mentioning the city’s historical beauty before its current condition.
The proposed design features a towering arch topped with a figure similar to the Statue of Liberty, complete with golden wings, surrounded by bald eagles. The text “ONE NATION UNDER GOD” will be displayed and echoed on the back with “LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.”
Planned for a site near the Lincoln Memorial, the arch would aim to enrich the experience at Arlington National Cemetery.
Ingle added, “This will enhance the experience for veterans, families of the fallen, and all Americans, serving as a tribute to the sacrifices of many American heroes through our history.”
The rising legal challenges and heated debates around the arch mirror a broader Democratic pushback against Trump’s recent cultural and construction endeavors. There was notable outrage in December over the renaming of the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center, with Congresswoman Joyce Beatty leading a lawsuit to reverse the rebranding.
Additionally, the $400 million White House Ballroom project is embroiled in legal disputes after the National Trust for Historic Preservation sued, alleging President Trump exceeded his authority by demolishing part of the East Wing. A recent court ruling allows renovation to proceed while the president considers requesting a Supreme Court review.
