Pelosi Denies Knowledge of Swalwell Allegations Amid Resignation

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has stated that she was unaware of the sexual misconduct and rape allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), which have emerged following claims from four women.

Swalwell, who announced his intention to resign Monday due to the looming threat of an expulsion vote, faced serious accusations that included a former staffer alleging that he raped her while she was incapacitated.

When journalist Frank Sesno questioned her about her awareness of the allegations prior to CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle’s report, Pelosi replied, “I didn’t know anything.”

During an event at George Washington University, Pelosi distanced herself from Swalwell, whom she has supported in the past. She characterized his resignation as a “wise decision” and the “right move” given the allegations.

Meanwhile, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) had been set to introduce a resolution for Swalwell’s expulsion before his announcement, with some Democratic colleagues already voicing support for this action. Swalwell had previously suspended his gubernatorial campaign after losing backing from major unions and congressional supporters.

Pelosi’s influence among California Democrats remains strong, but she seemed hesitant when asked if she had advised Swalwell to resign. She remarked, “Oh, I think that was his decision,” suggesting it was indeed the correct path for him to take.

Despite emphasizing that certain issues are best resolved outside political roles, Pelosi had previously urged him to step back from his gubernatorial ambitions amidst the scandal.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), a longtime friend of Swalwell, also expressed his shock, declaring he had no prior knowledge of the accusations, labeling the situation as leading a “double life.”

Gallego’s comments arise in the wake of Swalwell’s withdrawal from the looming California gubernatorial race due to these troubling allegations. As for Pelosi, she has indicated she will not be seeking reelection after a long career in Congress.

As of now, Swalwell’s office has not issued a statement in response to requests for comments on the situation.
