Brutal Attacks in Georgia Claim Life of Runner
A 40-year-old enthusiastic runner was fatally attacked in a series of violent incidents in Georgia, allegedly at the hands of a repeat offender.
Lauren Bliss was one of the victims identified in these attacks on Monday in DeKalb County. Police arrested 26-year-old Olaorkitan Adon Abel following the disturbing events.
“It’s evident that this was a completely random act of violence,” stated Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley.
The sequence of attacks started around 12:50 a.m. when officers found a woman shot multiple times on Wesley Chapel Road, who later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities have yet to release her name.
Next, the violence escalated in Brookhaven, where a man sleeping outside a business center on Peachtree Road was ambushed and shot multiple times; he is currently in critical condition.
The horrific spree concluded around 6:50 a.m. on Battle Forest Drive, where Bliss was discovered shot and stabbed. Witnesses reported seeing a man hovering over her before fleeing the scene. Tragically, she did not survive her injuries.
Adon was apprehended in Troup County after officers tracked his silver Volkswagen Jetta using a license plate recognition system.
He has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a felony in Brookhaven, with additional charges anticipated related to the incidents in DeKalb County.
Records indicate that Abel is no stranger to legal troubles. He was arrested last fall on sexual assault charges in Chatham County and received a prison sentence along with probation, which included a mandatory mental health evaluation.
Bliss’ social media profiles portray her as an avid runner, showcasing photos from various races she’s participated in. Her cousin, Lee Renfroe, expressed deep sorrow in a Facebook post: “My cousin Lauren Bliss was brutally murdered in a series of violent attacks in the Decatur, Georgia area. We love you, we miss you Lauren. Please pray for our family and the families of the other victims. I don’t even know how to fully collect my thoughts right now.”
