Infant Rescued from Flooded Car in Texas

A dramatic rescue of an infant trapped in a car engulfed by rising floodwaters unfolded in Beeville, Texas, and was captured on body camera video. This event happened on Saturday, as severe storms dumped significant rain across the region, making roads perilous.

Roughly 160 miles southeast of San Antonio, a low-lying railroad crossing became inundated due to the sudden downpour, ensnaring a passenger vehicle that entered it.

The Beeville Police Department reported, “Officers and firefighters responded after a vehicle recently entered a flooded creek intersection and began to be swept away by rapids,” in a Facebook update on Saturday.

Tragically, river flooding in Texas has already claimed the lives of at least six people, and emergency teams have been actively searching for the missing.

Authorities indicated that the rain fell so quickly there wasn’t time to establish barricades before vehicles reached the flooded area, and conditions deteriorated almost instantly.

A fire chief attempted to alert the driver but couldn’t locate him in time. Video footage shows the car becoming stranded as the floodwaters rose and water reached the wheels. An officer reported that the rushing water was pushing the vehicle toward the creek.

As responders assessed the situation, they heard the driver call out that there was an infant inside the car. Officers then waded through the floodwaters to open the door and rescue the baby in a carriage.

Once they pulled the child to safety, another rescuer quickly draped a jacket over the infant to shield her from the relentless rain.

Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, and the driver was also safely rescued from the vehicle.

Beeville police have used this incident as a cautionary tale regarding the hazards of flooding, emphasizing that conditions can shift from safe to perilous in moments. They advise that it doesn’t take much water to displace a vehicle, and by the time danger is recognized, it might already be too late.

Drivers are warned not to bypass barricades placed around roads or intersections, as doing so poses significant risks and is illegal. Authorities urge the public to drive cautiously during heavy rain and avoid areas prone to flooding.

The police stated, “No errand, no shortcut, no destination is worth risking your life or the safety of your family.”
