Sergio Garcia Issues Apology After Upset at Masters

Sergio Garcia took to social media on Tuesday to express his regret for losing his temper during the final round of the Masters. The 46-year-old golfer had an outburst on the second tee box after hitting a shot into a bunker. He was visibly frustrated, slamming his driver into the ground repeatedly, causing damage and sending turf flying, and even striking a nearby table.

Garcia, who won the Masters in 2017, stated he deeply regrets his behavior. “I want to apologize for my actions at Sunday’s Masters Tournament,” he posted. “I have great respect for everything that the Masters and Augusta National Golf Club represent. My actions were unacceptable and do not reflect the level of respect I have for the tournament, its sponsors, and the fans.”

This apology came amid significant criticism, with some ESPN commentators suggesting he should be removed from the event due to his misbehavior.

Club officials informed that Garcia received a code of conduct warning from competition committee chairman Jeff Yang while on the fourth tee. Garcia ended the tournament in 52nd place out of 54 participants, with an 8-over score.

Since his Masters victory, he has faced challenges in major tournaments. In fact, he hasn’t made it into the top 10 in 29 major events and missed the cut in six of the last eight tournaments since his win.

This isn’t the first time Garcia has faced disciplinary measures at a tournament. He was disqualified from the 2019 Saudi International for damaging greens and infamously broke his driver during the 2022 British Open, forcing him to play without it for most of the round.
