Raiders Set to Select QB Fernando Mendoza with Top Draft Pick

The Las Vegas Raiders are anticipated to choose Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, a national championship-winning quarterback, as the No. 1 overall pick in next week’s NFL Draft. This potential selection hasn’t deterred other teams from inquiring about trading up in the draft order.

During a pre-draft press conference, Raiders General Manager John Spytek mentioned that the team has already received “several calls” regarding the top pick. He noted, “Those teams know where they stand.” This suggests that there’s a significant interest in Mendoza.

Spytek discussed how successful trades can often take shape on draft night, sometimes just before selections are made. However, if a player like Mendoza, who seems to stand out to the Raiders, is on the table, it’s likely they will reject trade offers.

“If there’s a standout player that we think isn’t worth losing or even worth taking a call on, we just pick,” he stated. But he also added that if the team isn’t excited about a particular player, they would definitely consider offers for a trade.

Mendoza has positioned himself as a leading quarterback in this draft, especially after an undefeated season at Indiana. The Raiders’ need for a quarterback has become more prominent following the New York Jets’ decision to bring back Geno Smith as their starter. Yet, the Raiders also signed Kirk Cousins from the Atlanta Falcons on a hefty $172 million deal, with $20 million guaranteed. This implies that the Raiders plan to mentor their drafted players, including Aidan O’Connell, who is on the roster under new head coach Clint Kubiak.

Kubiak, who previously won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks, was promoted after a year with the Raiders. While things haven’t gone as smoothly in Las Vegas, the future seems brighter. Spytek has effectively utilized the team’s salary cap space to sign several new players, enhancing the roster.

Looking ahead, Spytek aims to further strengthen the team by potentially adding key players through the draft. The Raiders have a total of ten picks this year, including the coveted top pick for the first time since 2007.

Regardless of whether they select Mendoza or another player, every new addition will need to earn their spot on the team and contribute on the field.

In closing, Spytek reflected on the competitive nature of the team dynamics: “At the end of the day, this is a meritocracy and the best players will play. It’s really hard to play really well at a young age, but we’ve seen a lot of quarterbacks do it lately. We added Kirk, we added Aidan, and we’ll see what happens.” The NFL Draft is set to start next Thursday in Pittsburgh, and it promises to be an exciting event for the Raiders.
