Tax Season Update
This filing season, over 53 million taxpayers have taken advantage of at least one of President Donald Trump’s major tax cuts. The average tax refund this year is around $3,400, according to the latest Ministry of Finance data released on Tax Day.
The figures reflect the first tax filing season since the Working Families Tax Cut, a Republican-backed initiative that was passed last July and implemented by the IRS. Officials from the Trump administration have been highlighting its broad acceptance and the expanded benefits it offers.
As April 15 approaches, marking the tax filing deadline, the president had promised this would be “the biggest tax refund season in American history,” thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Interestingly, average tax refunds have seen an increase of 11% compared to last season, based on information from the Treasury Department. Those who utilized at least one new provision benefited from an average tax reduction of about $800.
Delving deeper into the data, it appears several provisions from the new law are quite popular. Roughly 25 million filers have applied for the overtime deduction, while around 6 million opted for the tip tax deduction. An estimated 30 million seniors have taken advantage of an expanded tax credit, and about 34 million households applied for the expanded child tax credit.
In addition, over 105 million filers have utilized the expanded standard deduction, and approximately 1 million people deducted interest on auto loans specifically for new U.S.-made vehicles.
The Ministry of Finance has indicated that more than 5 million individuals have opened “Trump accounts,” which include about 1.2 million individuals eligible for a $1,000 contribution from a pilot program. This account, established under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, functions as a government-backed investment fund for children, focusing on long-term growth with tailored rules to safeguard young savers.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commented that the results demonstrate how the administration’s tax policies are genuinely helping workers and their families, emphasizing that under President Trump, hard-working Americans should find support rather than face higher taxes. He reiterated that taxpayers are retaining more of their earnings, allowing for increased paychecks.
