NFL is said to start preparing replacement officials during negotiations with referees.

NFL is considering bringing back replacement referees despite the 2012 'Fail Mary' incident.

The NFL is taking steps to prepare for the possibility of using replacement officials if unionized referees aren’t available. Recently, a memo was sent to teams, indicating that these potential replacement refs have either completed or are currently undergoing background checks.

Reportedly, many of these officials have experience working across various NCAA divisions, and they will be subjected to physical exams as well. The NFL Referees Association is currently negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement, and teams have been briefed to anticipate official changes during practice if a new deal isn’t finalized by June 1st. The existing contract expires on May 31st, with efforts to negotiate a new agreement set to kick off in the summer of 2024.

Perry Fewell, the league’s senior vice president of officiating, mentioned in the memo that they are keen to gather insights on the performance of potential replacement officials as they finalize game rosters for training camps and preseason games.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell noted that discussions regarding the contract haven’t progressed as swiftly as they had anticipated. He emphasized the league’s responsibility to fans and stated that they must be prepared to play, even while remaining involved in negotiations.

Historically, the NFL has utilized replacement officials, most notably at the beginning of the 2012 season, which included the infamous “Fail Mary” incident that saw the Seahawks win in a controversial manner. Last year, the league expressed intentions to enforce stricter accountability and performance standards for officiating, aiming to enhance the officiating experienced during crucial games.

It seems that the NFL Referees Association is focused on keeping the current standards, showing resistance to at least some of the proposed changes. It’s a situation that echoes a lot of uncertainty, and well, the next steps could be pivotal.
