Texas College Student Charged with Attack on OpenAI CEO
A Texas college student has been charged after allegedly attacking Sam Altman’s residence and the OpenAI headquarters. Recent messages reveal that the student, Daniel Moreno-Gama, once discussed the “Luigiization of tech CEOs” during an online conversation with filmmakers.
Twenty-year-old Moreno-Gama, from the Houston area, mentioned a murder suspect, Luigi Mangione, in discussions with producers related to an AI-focused series. Screenshots of these exchanges were shared with a podcast team that sought to interview him.
In a January podcast, he expressed his shift from being simply an internet enthusiast to someone worried about the threats posed by AI. However, he stressed in a separate recording that any earlier comments hinting at violence shouldn’t be taken literally.
“I can grasp the frustration, but it’s not practical,” he remarked, emphasizing that violence is not the answer.
Authorities charged him for traveling to San Francisco, where he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home and attempted to set the OpenAI building on fire.
Reports have indicated that Moreno-Gama’s actions were driven by a fear of “imminent extinction” caused by AI.
After his Friday arrest, police found a document describing his intentions. In the complaint filed in federal court, he purportedly stated a goal of killing Altman and outlined concerns about AI threatening humanity’s survival. The document included his assertion that he had “killed/tried to kill” Altman and listed several AI leaders’ identities.
Furthermore, he concluded his note to Altman with a somewhat dramatic, “If by some miracle you are alive, I will take this as a sign from God to save myself.”
Moreno-Gama now faces both federal and state charges, including attempted murder and arson, but he has yet to enter a plea. His public defender argued that the charges were excessive, suggesting they amounted to a “property crime at best.”
“It feels unfair for the authorities to exploit this young man’s vulnerabilities simply due to the prominence of those involved,” the defender stated.
Interestingly, Moreno-Gama has a history of autism and mental health struggles, indicating that his actions might stem more from a crisis than a malicious intent.
In light of the situation, his parents expressed concern for their son’s well-being and stated they are pursuing mental health treatment. They described him as compassionate and noted that he had never faced arrest prior to this.
During a podcast later, Moreno-Gama reflected on finding ChatGPT “incredible” in his high school years.
Using the online handle “Butler Jihadist,” a nod to fictional battles between humans and AI, he had recorded podcasts under “Discord Dan,” but events led to his identity being revealed.
According to Longview’s Editor-in-Chief, the podcast initially protected Moreno-Gama’s anonymity. However, his public actions created a clear connection to his real identity.
Additionally, a CEO from PauseAI mentioned that Moreno-Gama had joined their public Discord server and sent 34 messages, none of which directly incited violence, he claimed. “We strongly condemn this attack and any form of violence,” he added.
The incident has sparked discussions, with commentators noting the urgency of addressing the potential upheavals AI could cause. Moving forward without planning could empower individuals like Altman to shape AI according to their own progressive visions, potentially sidelining broader public interests.
