Democrat supported by Sanders and AOC wins special election seat in New Jersey

Analilia Mejia, supported by Sanders and AOC, secures victory in New Jersey Democratic primary

Republicans were unable to secure a victory in a bid to take over a vacant seat in a district leaning Democratic in northern New Jersey.

Analilia Mejia, a Democrat with backing from notable progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, won against Republican Joe Hathaway in the special election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, as reported by the Associated Press.

Mejia will complete the remaining eight months of the term left by Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat who resigned after winning the New Jersey gubernatorial race in November.

This special election came at a time when Republicans were holding onto a delicate majority in the House. They were eager to win this position but faced significant challenges. In the prior elections, Sherrill had won by a notable margin of 15 points, both in her re-election and in last year’s gubernatorial race.

Mejia, who previously served as the national political director for Sanders’ 2020 campaign, previously surprised many by narrowly defeating former Rep. Tom Malinowski in February’s Democratic primary, which had a crowded field of 11 candidates. Her candidacy was particularly favored by the left wing of the party, which was contrasted with the fragmented moderate and center-left votes.

Her win marks another gain for progressive forces, reminiscent of the recent surprising primary win of a democratic socialist in New York.

Hathaway, a former mayor of Randolph Township, pointed out that voters were facing a clear choice between a practical leader who has achieved local successes and one representing a far-left ideology. He voiced concerns over Mejia’s approach, particularly her rhetoric that he described as ideologically charged.

Mejia’s campaign has also included attempts to unify local Democratic support, most recently appearing alongside Sherrill. Hathaway, while campaigning, emphasized his ability to connect with independent voters and cited a history within the district where Jewish voters, traditionally Democratic, expressed a willingness to support him.

In debates, Hathaway has highlighted some of Mejia’s criticisms of Israel and expressed concern over the potential impacts of rhetoric on community relations. Mejia contested Hathaway’s claims, articulating her stance on separating criticism of governmental actions from anti-Semitic sentiments.

Mejia received significant backing from J Street PAC, a liberal pro-Israel group, although this endorsement prompted backlash from parts of her support base.

Hathaway has also attempted to position himself apart from Trump, criticizing both policies and Trump’s overall influence on Republican candidates. He indicated that he aims to represent the interests of the local community effectively, especially regarding affordability and safety measures.

Despite illustrating his approach and goals, Hathaway struggled against the existing political landscape and the trends working against Republican candidates, reflecting a broader trend of excessive partisan loyalty among voters. Analysts suggest that many Democratic voters are unlikely to support Republican candidates, which could weigh heavily on outcomes as the election day approaches.
