Skeletal Remains of Missing Mother Discovered in Washington State

In a tragic turn of events, hikers in Washington state have uncovered the skeletal remains of a missing mother of three. Hayley Asay, aged 33, was last seen foraging for mushrooms with an unidentified man just before Thanksgiving in 2024.

The shocking discovery took place on Sunday in a secluded area near Kelso, Washington, when two hikers stumbled upon some bones and a piece of clothing. The Cowlitz Sheriff’s Office confirmed the news on Wednesday.

It’s particularly unsettling, as this area is located just north of the Oregon border.

Due to the time they made the find, officials were unable to reach the site until the following day. They requested the hikers to take photos of the bones, which were subsequently forwarded to forensic anthropologists for analysis.

After confirming that the bones were human, one of the hikers later joined a search party that, guided by authorities, led them to a location off Rose Valley Road where more bones were discovered.

According to the sheriff’s office, a near-complete set of skeletal remains was found, alongside clothing items and personal belongings.

Interestingly, this area had already been categorized as an “area of interest” in the investigation of Asay’s disappearance, though previous searches had not yielded any evidence.

The remains were positively identified as belonging to Asay through forensic analysis, which matched her skull with her dental records.

Asay had been reported missing by her family in January 2025, more than a month after her last known communication with her mother, Nicole Brooks, who mentioned that Hayley was with an unfamiliar man.

In conversations prior to her disappearance, Asay had indicated to a friend that she was going mushroom hunting with a man, though details remain unclear.

Brooks expressed heartbreak over the loss, stating, “I can hear her say, ‘Hello, Mom,’ and it breaks my heart to think I’ll never hear her again.” While fearing this outcome, she struggled with the devastating reality, saying, “It’s not that we didn’t expect it to turn out this way, but it certainly wasn’t what we had hoped for in our hearts. It was a nightmare. Just a nightmare. You don’t know anything, but you hold out hope. And the longer it goes on, the harder it gets.”

Asay leaves behind three daughters, who are now being cared for by her family. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the cause or manner of Asay’s death, and no criminal charges have been announced in connection with her case.
