VP J.D. Vance Reacts to Pope Leo’s Clarification

Vice President J.D. Vance expressed his gratitude on Saturday after Pope Leo addressed recent comments he made during a trip to Africa, stating that there had been some misleading narratives surrounding his remarks. The Pope clarified that his speech was prepared weeks before President Trump’s response, denying any direct reference to the president.

Vance, a practicing Catholic who met Pope Leo in 2025, welcomed this clarification. Earlier in the week, he had suggested that the Pope should be cautious when discussing complex theological and political issues.

“Media coverage tends to escalate conflicts,” Vance remarked. “While real disagreements exist and will persist, the situation is often more nuanced.” He added, “Pope Leo will certainly preach the Gospel, but that includes addressing the pressing moral issues of today. The president and his administration are trying to apply those moral principles to a chaotic world. We hope he remains in our prayers.”

Pope Clarifies Remarks on Tyrants

The Pope’s comments about the world being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants” were not aimed at President Trump, according to reports. Tensions have been rising in Cameroon after the Pope criticized those who “manipulate religion” for political and military advantages. He stated, “Blessed are the peacemakers, but woe to those who exploit religion and the name of God for personal gain, pulling the sacred into darkness.”

Some interpreted these remarks as a commentary on the Trump administration’s approach to the conflict with Iran, which has fueled a broader dispute between the White House and the Vatican.

Trump’s Response to the Pope

In light of the controversy, President Trump labeled the Pope’s foreign policy stance as “terrible.” The Pope criticized inflammatory rhetoric surrounding the conflict, specifically denouncing comments regarding potential actions against Iran’s “entire civilization” as “truly unacceptable.” In retaliation, Trump dismissed the Pope’s analysis as “weak on crime and terrible on foreign policy.”

The back-and-forth continued for several days, with government officials rallying behind the president and voicing their own critiques of the Pope’s statements, further intensifying the conflict.

Pope Stays Focused on Message of Peace

Despite the brewing tensions, the Pope conveyed that discussing the President “is not in my interest at all” and reiterated his commitment to promoting messages of peace, justice, and brotherhood. “Much of what has been reported since then is merely interpretations of prior comments,” he added, aiming to refocus the narrative on his principles.
