Mets Continue Losing Streak Against Cubs
CHICAGO — The Mets attempted to shake things up on Sunday, but the end result was all too familiar: another loss with an opponent celebrating on their field.
Devin Williams, donned in goat horns, secured a save in the ninth inning while Nico Horner drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for the Mets against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. This marks the Mets’ 11th consecutive loss.
This streak ties for the longest the franchise has faced since 2002.
The Mets struggled at the plate, despite allowing only 10 runs over six games during their road trip. On this particular day, they managed just one hit in nine attempts with runners in scoring position.
In the 10th inning, with no outs, Kimbrel threw a wild pitch that moved automatic runner Pete Crowe Armstrong to third base before Horner’s fly ball advanced him home.
Former Mets player Michael Conforto tied the game in the ninth with a pinch-hit RBI double against Williams. Tyrone Taylor fumbled the ball in right field, which let Ian Happ score easily. Happ had previously singled against Williams in the first inning, and Williams had a rough outing against the Dodgers, pitching just one-third of an inning and allowing four earned runs.
Tobias Myers started the game for the Mets, throwing two scoreless innings before David Peterson took over in the third. Peterson delivered 3 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief, his most effective performance since his first start this season.
Peterson faced trouble right away, conceding a triple to Crowe Armstrong, but escaped the inning thanks to a line drive double play by Horner and a catch from third base.
MJ Melendez, one of the few bright spots for the Mets, blasted a leadoff home run in the fifth inning after working the count full against Javier Assad. This marked the Mets’ first home run of the game. Melendez had started strong, recording four hits in ten at-bats since his call-up from Triple-A Syracuse.
Peterson struck out Crowe Armstrong with two outs in the fifth, but Crowe Armstrong was caught trying to advance to second base by Lewis Torrence.
In the sixth inning, Horner managed a single and swiped second base with one out. After Michael Busch was retired, Huascar Brazoban replaced Peterson. Brazoban walked two batters, loading the bases before striking out Seiya Suzuki, managing to keep the game within one run.
Matt Shaw led off the bottom of the seventh with a single but was left stranded at second following a wild pitch from Brooks Lally, as Luke Weaver closed out the inning by retiring Dansby Swanson.
Weaver pitched a scoreless eighth before handing off to Williams in the ninth.
