Tragic Accident at Nürburgring Race
Juha Miettinen, a BMW driver aged 66, lost his life in a seven-vehicle pile-up during the ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hours Qualifying event in Germany on Saturday. Organizers confirmed the incident through a statement.
According to the Nurburgring Langstäcken Serie, this unfortunate accident occurred early in the first race of the day. They reported, “A serious accident involving seven riders happened shortly after the race began, prompting race control to halt the event for extensive recovery efforts.”
Despite emergency services’ swift response, paramedics could not free Miettinen from the wreckage, and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the medical center.
The other six drivers caught in the collision were taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary evaluations, but thankfully, their injuries were not life-threatening.
The collision took place approximately 25 minutes into the race, specifically on the Karssel section of the Nordschleife circuit, and the race did not continue afterward.
Max Verstappen, a four-time F1 champion who was at the circuit in preparation for an upcoming race, shared his condolences through his Instagram Story. “I am shocked by today’s events,” he expressed. “Motorsport is something we all love, but occasions like this remind us how perilous it can be. Our deepest sympathies go out to Juha’s family and loved ones.”
Miettinen had recently posted on social media, expressing excitement for the races ahead, including a collaboration with co-driver Dan Bergfurt. His last update noted preparations for two races scheduled within a short timeframe.
A moment of silence will be observed in his honor during the next race. The Nürburgring Nordschleife is notorious for its challenging layout, characterized by over 150 corners and tight barriers, winding through Germany’s scenic wooded hills.
