Austin Hedges Proposes After Guardians Win

What could be more memorable than a win on the baseball field? For Cleveland Guardians catcher Austin Hedges, it was getting engaged to his girlfriend, Lexi Dixon, right after the game.

Following the Guardians’ 8-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, Hedges dropped to one knee at Progressive Field. A message appeared on the jumbotron, and his teammates looked on as he proposed. Dixon was taken by surprise and, with emotions running high, she said yes before the crowd could start cheering.

Hedges mentioned to reporters that he’d been planning the proposal for a while, with the ring ready since spring training. However, he only finalized the details a few weeks ago. “I really hoped we could win the game,” he said, adding that while he would have proposed either way, getting the win made it even more special.

The jumbotron displayed the question, “Lexi, will you marry me?” as he knelt to propose. “I was very nervous,” Hedges confessed. “I always get nervous before a game, and knowing there was something special afterward only added to it. But today was particularly special.”

Dixon wore a custom black jacket adorned with Hedges’ jersey number and a photo of herself on the back. After saying yes, she excitedly showed the ring to Guardians players, friends, and family, snapping photos on the field.

Despite not having the best game—he went 0-for-4 but managed an RBI—all that mattered was the victory, improving the team’s season record to 13-10.

As for their evening, Hedges and Dixon intended to keep things low-key after the excitement of the day. They planned to head out for dinner to unwind.

Given that Hedges is set to play on Monday night against the Houston Astros, it’s probably good they chose a quiet celebration. Now they have their first night as an engaged couple to navigate this new chapter in their lives, which has certainly evolved alongside the game they love.
