Ismaël Koné sustains a severe leg injury during Canada’s 6-0 victory in the World Cup

U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team Starts Off World Cup with Big Win

The U.S. men’s national soccer team kicked off their World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Dan Dakich shared insights on the match, emphasizing the team’s speed and confidence, which he believes stems from the high-level experience many players possess. Such a strong start certainly places Team USA in a favorable position for the upcoming stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, Canada enjoyed a stunning 6-0 win over Qatar in their second match of the World Cup. However, the moment was overshadowed by a serious injury to Ismael Kone. The incident occurred in the second half when Qatar’s Asim Madibo made a harsh tackle, prompting immediate concern from Canadian players and staff. The tackle was clearly dangerous, and it became apparent that Kone was in a serious situation.

Replays revealed the severity of the tackle, and as players gathered around Kone, it was evident that he was in shock. His left leg appeared to be injured in a way that was hard to watch. After a video review, the referee decided to show Madibo a red card, which only added to Qatar’s struggles after they had already conceded the opening goal by Homan Ahmed in the 33rd minute.

Interestingly, Madibo was visibly shaken, placing his hands on his head, obviously disturbed by the whole situation as Kone received medical attention. As Kone was being carried off the field on a stretcher, fans in Vancouver’s BC Place erupted in applause, showing their support. Given the nature of the injury, it’s likely that Kone’s World Cup journey might be cut short.

Nathan Saliba stepped in to replace Kone in the 57th minute, quickly making an impact by scoring just seven minutes later. As Canada moved ahead to 4-0, Saliba held up Kone’s jersey, eliciting loud cheers from the crowd. Qatar faced even more trouble in the 75th minute when they conceded an own goal by Mohamed Manai, further demonstrating Canada’s dominance throughout the match.

Jonathan David made headlines with a hat-trick, scoring first in the 29th minute and then again during stoppage time. Cyle Larin also got the party started with an early goal in the 16th minute. This big win marked not only Canada’s first World Cup victory but also secured their top position in Group B after their earlier draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In another match, Switzerland grabbed four points with a convincing 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, setting the stage for a decisive group stage match on June 24.
