Hawks Take Game 1 Against Knicks

In the first game, the Hawks struggled to contain Karl-Anthony Towns. Despite their efforts, he continued to excel, especially through the early stages of the third quarter.

However, Towns became less involved in the final period. The Knicks were down by 12 points in the fourth quarter but managed a dramatic 107-106 comeback victory at Madison Square Garden, giving the Hawks a home-court advantage.

Throughout the game, Towns took only two shots in the closing quarter and ended up with 15 points, shooting just 22.7 percent. “Shooting-wise, I just didn’t have a chance,” Towns remarked, finishing with a total of 18 points and eight rebounds, shooting 8-of-12. “I trust everyone in this locker room to shoot the ball. We didn’t get it done in the fourth, but we’ll be alright.”

While Atlanta may have lacked the personnel to effectively defend Towns, Jonathan Kuminga stepped up, scoring 19 points off the bench and disrupting Towns’ involvement during crucial moments.

In the closing minutes, the Knicks faced various challenges. They couldn’t contain CJ McCollum, and with the Knicks leading by one, Mikal Bridges opted for a fadeaway jumper as time expired instead of making a more aggressive play. To make matters worse, OG Anunoby missed two critical free throws.

Interestingly, Towns’ performance was less impactful compared to his earlier game where he scored 25 points and delivered eight rebounds along with four assists against the Hawks during the regular season.

The game leaned heavily towards Jalen Brunson, who attempted eight shots but converted only three in this tense matchup. The Knicks also struggled from behind the arc, taking 11 three-point shots and connecting on just three.

“We definitely could have established a better rhythm,” Towns said. “At this point, you have to review the tape. It’s tough to assess the game when emotions are still running high.”
