The recent Artemis 2 mission, where astronauts orbited the Moon, served as a powerful reminder of how space exploration ignites feelings of unity and hope. Together, we’ve collectively traveled millions of miles through space, all while serving our country with pride and focusing on common objectives. We’ve always spoken up when we noticed issues needing attention.
As former NASA astronauts, we pledged to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution. Our love for this country runs deep, grounded in the American values that have been our guiding principles for almost 250 years. Starting April 21, we embark on a new mission aimed at respecting the Constitution and supporting leaders who are focused on effective governance and safeguarding American democracy for the long term.
With the backing of over 100 fellow former NASA astronauts, we’ve established Astronauts for America, an initiative to champion democratic values that foster self-governance. Our diverse membership comprised of Republicans, Democrats, and independents spans various backgrounds across the nation. We approach this work not with ideology, but with a rooted sense of duty.
Steve dedicated over 30 years to serving our country as a pilot and astronaut in the U.S. Air Force and NASA. Garrett spent 95 days aboard the International Space Station and has been with SpaceX for more than ten years, currently working as a senior advisor and director of space operations. Joining NASA was about reaching the heights of what America can achieve through science, creativity, and teamwork, exploring new frontiers.
From a cosmic standpoint, it’s evident that what connects us is significantly more impactful than what separates us. However, recent decades of political polarization have weakened our democracy, undermining essential constitutional norms, like a respect for law and limitations on government authority. There is a troubling trend of neglecting evidence and expertise when it interferes with political agendas. When democratic systems falter, it triggers a chain reaction, suppressing civil rights, undermining scientific progress, and threatening national security.
To strengthen democracy, ongoing commitment from all corners is fundamental. Through Astronauts for America, we strive to revive respect for the Constitution by collaborating across our differences and emphasizing truthfulness and integrity in leadership. We assist voters in endorsing officials who adhere to constitutional fidelity and prioritize data-driven decisions, mirroring our own values. We advocate for leaders who prioritize action over division, while also holding policymakers accountable for neglecting the rule of law.
To our fellow Americans, we emphasize: Democracy calls for participation, not just spectatorship. Let’s counter division, polarization, and threats to American values. It’s crucial to confront these challenges head-on and remember our shared duty to uphold the Constitution and the democratic ideals that make this country exceptional. Stand up for every child in America who deserves to express dissent without fear of violence or marginalization and for every child who dreams of exploring space or pursuing their own version of the American Dream.
Those who serve in the military or strap into rockets ponder how they’ll respond when faced with tests. Will they rise to the challenge or falter under pressure? We all hope we can be our best selves and that our colleagues will support us along the way.
Times are tough right now. Yet, we’ve witnessed, both up close and from space, the remarkable potential that emerges when Americans unite to prioritize the well-being of our country.
