Oklahoma Deputy Killed in Welfare Check Shooting

An Oklahoma deputy was tragically killed, and a police chief was injured after a suspect allegedly opened fire during a welfare check on Sunday, according to authorities.

The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. near Route 270 in Wistar, prompting the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office to call for an investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI). Reports indicate that 36-year-old Edgar Lara immediately started shooting at officers from the Wistar Police Department and U.S. Forest Service as they arrived at the scene.

Lara then barricaded himself inside the house, leading to a lengthy standoff. A gunfight erupted, and additional law enforcement, including the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, was called in for support.

Eventually, around 4 p.m., Lara surrendered, sustaining minor injuries in the process before being booked into the LeFlore County Jail. Formal charges are still pending through the local District Attorney’s office.

During the standoff, Deputy Thomas “Walker” LeMay and Wistar Police Chief Andy Thompson were injured. Sadly, Deputy LeMay later succumbed to his injuries, while Chief Thompson remains hospitalized but is reported to be in stable condition.

The LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over LeMay’s death, noting he was a “true servant of the people.” His loss resonates deeply, with community members encouraged to honor him by leaving decorations at a police car placed on the courthouse lawn.

Joe Gamaldi, a national vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police, described the shooting as a “horrific” ambush, calling it unimaginable for LeMay’s loved ones.

Witnesses reported hearing numerous gunshots during the incident, with one individual stating he backed away from the area after hearing more than a dozen shots.

OSBI has assured the public that there is no ongoing threat connected to this incident, and the investigation continues, with multiple agencies involved, including the Pocola Police Department and other local law enforcement.

In a statement, OSBI extended their thoughts and prayers to the LeFlore County community during this difficult time.
