Bernie Sanders’ Group Endorses Tom Steyer for California Governor

Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders’ progressive organization has thrown its support behind Tom Steyer, a billionaire aiming to become California’s next governor. This endorsement stands out, given that Steyer, a first-time candidate, faces a bustling competition.

The group emphasizes reducing the influence of wealthy individuals and corporations in politics. Despite some reservations about Steyer’s wealth, they’ve noted that he’s using his fortune to back progressive policies, such as comprehensive healthcare and reducing corporate power. They believe this move isn’t just strategic; it’s also about winning.

“Tom Steyer knows that California’s affordability crisis didn’t just happen. It’s a byproduct of a system dominated by wealth and corporate interests that ignores everyday workers,” Joseph Giebergese, Executive Director of Our Revolution, said. “While many stick to the status quo, Tom has chosen to challenge the system that favors the affluent.”

Even though Sanders is typically critical of billionaires in politics, he refers to Steyer as a “friend” while expressing his discomfort with their presence in the political sphere.

Our Revolution’s endorsement highlights the importance of supporting candidates capable of winning in a competitive race. They state, “In a crucial election where Republicans pose a serious threat, it’s essential to back candidates aligned with our values and who can gain traction.” Their local organizers in California have reported a surge of enthusiasm for Steyer’s campaign.

Steyer has attracted a modest amount of funding from individual donors—about $161,485—representing less than 1% of his overall campaign funds, with the majority sourced from his personal wealth. His financial background stems from managing a hedge fund that invested significantly in industries like coal and private prisons, which he has since publicly regretted. Post-hedge fund, Steyer focused on climate change advocacy and has successfully led multiple statewide initiatives in California.

“For the last decade, our revolution has worked hard to mobilize and energize progressive voters,” Steyer said, appreciating the support. “As governor, I commit to tirelessly pursue our shared vision for a California that serves its working citizens.”
